How to choose a makeup artist for your wedding day

I know how overwhelming and tricky it can be choosing a makeup artist for your wedding day. It’s super important to make sure you do your research. When choosing the perfect makeup artist for you think:

·         Is their style similar to the makeup you create on myself on a day-to-day basis? If you wear more natural makeup don’t go for somebody who loves to create the ‘Insta-glam’ look and vice a versa.

·         Do they add filters to their images on social media? If a makeup artists work is heavily edited, I would be wary of booking this person, you can tell if you zoom in and you don’t see natural skin such as pores, fine hairs etc. Their images will not be a true representation of their work so make sure you are looking for unfiltered images!

·         It may sound obvious but are they local? There are tons of amazing artists here in Dorset/Hampshire, don’t feel you need to go knocking on London’s door to get your artist, scroll through peoples website based around here and you will be overjoyed with what is available. (I always recommend Tara Sanger, Ruby Peacock and Heidi Reid if I am not free/you want another artists opinion!)

·         Do they do mostly bridal work, or are they more fashion/editorial? Bridal makeup artists know what the best products to use for longevity are, they have practise working under pressure on the morning of a wedding, and are well practised when creating makeup for natural lighting (compared to that of studio lights etc). This is not to say that an editorial makeup artist wouldn’t be a great option, it’s just they aren’t used to the bridal makeup world.

·         What are you willing to spend? Have a budget in mind, but remember to be flexible. This is an important factor. Bridal makeup isn’t cheap, but at the end of the day it is one of the most ‘seen’ things at a wedding, the brides face! You’ll have these images for years to come, do you really want to scrimp on a makeup artist that isn’t experienced? Of course, if someone is quoting prices through the roof, look elsewhere, but remember ANYONE can say their a makeup artist but not EVERYBODY has the necessary talent to create a beautiful, light-weight, long lasting bridal makeup. You pay for experience, high-quality products, and strong application technique.

I hope this has helped and feel free to contact me if you think I could be the perfect makeup artist for you!
